AmeriCorps Conservation Fellow

AmeriCorps Fellows serve alongside local organizations to build stronger volunteer programs, develop new initiatives, expand outreach, and strengthen services that benefit our community. Fellows help create lasting improvements that allow organizations to continue growing long after their service term ends.

We’re currently seeking a passionate individuals who want to become part of a nationwide network of service leaders.

This position would work to improve ecosystems and habitats on WREC-owned property, and the properties of our community partners. 

  • Use hand tools, electric tools, and herbicides to manage invasive plants.  
  • Navigate both urban and rural properties, through thick vegetation and uneven terrain in all weather conditions.  
  • Work both alone and with other technicians.
  • Track conservation efforts and invasive plant presence/absence digitally.
  • Earn an herbicide technician certification, paid for by WREC.

Desired qualifications

  • Comfortable working in all weather conditions

  • Experience working both on a team and solo
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds and navigate uneven terrain

This position is through the West Lafayette Parks Department, but the successful applicant will report directly to and work with WREC staff.

Purdue Student Federal Work Study
Database Technician

This position’s goal is to improve data storage, database development, and quality control of water quality data and conservation data.  The successful candidate will work with data in MS Excel and MS Access. This position will primarily be located in WREC’s office in downtown Lafayette, with some ability to work remotely as long as the candidate has access to the necessary software. Weekend work, chemistry lab work, and field work may be necessary once a semester during the water sampling event.

Duties and responsibilities

• Quality control checks of existing data stored in MS Excel sheets – improve data management
• Developing a database to store this data in MS Access – database development
• Developing data entry and QAQC procedures for future water quality data collection events – improve data storage and future database management
• Assisting in water quality collection events – develop a background understanding of data collection
• Assisting in lab analysis of water quality samples as needed – develop a background understanding of data collection

Qualifications

• Experience working with datasets in MS Excel
• Experience building databases
• Experience with or ability to learn MS Access
• Ability to follow instructions and work independently
• Experience running quality control checks on data sets
• Attention to detail

Compensation: $20/hour, approximately 5 hours/week

Purdue Student Federal Work Study
Invasive Plant Technician

This position would work to improve ecosystems and habitats on WREC-owned property, and the properties of our community partners.  This is a 100% field job, primarily consisting of cutting and treating honeysuckle, tree of heaven, and wintercreeper. 

Primary duties

  • Use hand tools, electric tools, and herbicides to manage invasive plants.  
  • Navigate both urban and rural properties, through thick vegetation and uneven terrain in all weather conditions.  
  • Work both alone and with other technicians.
  • Earn an herbicide technician certification, paid for by WREC.
